✨1. ship’s bridge

✨2. BnL’s CEO

Tim Cook:

✨3. holo-detector

There was no need for anyone to pilot the huge star liner.

He piloted the plane from Paris to Deauville (多维尔).

The Axiom had been flying on a fixed path within Earth’s solar system for seven hundred years.

The money has been invested for a fixed period.

Panels lit up as he passed.

She lit a candle.

He was about to order a meal when he looked at the time.

Have you ordered yet?

The Captain looked at her,wide-eyed.

She stared at him in wide-eyed amazement.

He had the voice of an experienced pilot.

He’s very experienced in looking after animals.

It matched the green light flashing on his control panel.

The two sets of figures don’t match.

✨8.「cover」

The Captain took it and blew the dust from its cover.

Her face was on the cover of every magazine.

✨9.「place」

Simply follow the instructions in this handbook to place the plant in your ship’s holo-detector.

He placed his hand on her shoulder.

✨1. As the Captain finally entered the bridge, a coffee-bot rose from the ship’s control panel.

✨2. At this stage, Auto controlled the ship far more than the Captain did.

💡「at this stage」指在目前这个阶段;后面一个比较句,far用来加深more than的程度,因此「far more than」表示”多得多“,而the Captain did中的did,是承前替代了controlled这个动词;

✨3. He pressed a button on the panel and changed the settings for the computerized sun from midday back to early morning. He smiled with satisfaction. Now he hadn’t woken up late.

💡「press a button」表示“按下按钮”,这里表示“他按下控制台(panel)上面的按钮”;

💡「the settings」指”设置“,我们手机里的各种设置也叫作setting;

✨4. The Captain now appeared on every passenger’s screen. A section of the fake sky became a large video screen that showed his image.

💡「appear」,意思是“出现”(它的反义词disappear,即“消失”);「fake」,指“伪造的、假冒的”,the fake sky再次印证飞船上的蓝天白云都是电脑化的,可以人为操控;

💡「that showed his image」,是一个定语从句,修饰前面的screen,即“显示着船长影像的屏幕…”。

✨5. It had been seven hundred years since the Axiom flew out to space!

💡「since」在引导时间状语时,是完成时的标志,一般来说,在没有特别说明的情况下,主句用现在完成时,但因为在这里,整个故事都是用过去时态讲述的,所以相应地用了过去完成时had been seven hundred years;

💡「flew out to someplace」这个短语意思是“飞到某地”, flew是动词fly的过去式。

✨6. She was fully prepared to complete her directive — the secret directive she had refused to tell WALL•E about back on Earth.

💡「be fully prepared to do sth」 ,指“为某事做好了充分的准备”,这里表示EVE已经为完成她的指令做好了充分的准备;

💡「—」这个符号在英文中叫做dash,和我们的破折号作用差不多,在这里是进一步解释说明前面的名词directive,有时也可以用括号;

💡「she had refused to tell WALL•E about back on Earth」是一个省略了that的定语从句,修饰the secret directive;「refuse to tell sb. about sth」 ,拒绝告诉某人某事,或者拒绝向某人透露某事;「back on Earth」,意思是“之前在地球上的时候”;综上,即这个秘密指令是之前EVE在地球上拒绝透露给 WALL•E的。

✨7. Not knowing what the green flashing light meant, the Captain pushed the flashing green button on the control panel, just to see what would happen.

💡「Not knowing…」

💡「just to see…」

Looking out of the window, he saw a beautiful girl on the street.(他往窗外看的时候,看见街上有一个漂亮的女孩子。)

✨8. The room suddenly went dark, and a screen showing the image of BnL’s CEO appeared.

💡「showing the image of BnL’s CEO」,这个部分修饰a screen;appeared是a screen的谓语动词。

✨9. “If you’re seeing this, that means your ‘EVE’ probe has returned from Earth with a proven example of continuing photosynthesis.”

💡「probe」指“探测、调查”;

💡「return from…with…」这个短语意思是“带着某物从某地回来”;

💡「proven」是动词prove的变形,意思是“经证实的”,「a proven example」意思是“一个已经证 实的例子”;

✨10. “Home?” the Captain asked Auto, “Does he mean ‘home’ home?” Auto looked as if he had not heard the question.

💡「Does he mean ‘home’ home?」,这是一种确认他人和自己对某个词的理解是否一致的问句,在口语中比较常见,大意是“他说的home是我们平时理解的那个home吗?”;

💡「as if」,“就像是……

✨11. “Now that Earth has been brought back to a state where it can support life, we can begin Operation: Recolonize!”

Now that I’ve got a car, I can visit her more often.

💡「be brought back to a state」,指“被带回到某一种状态。”

💡「where it can support life」是一个由where引导的定语从句,修饰a state, 「support life」,指“供养生命”。

✨The Moon was but a Chin of Gold

Emily Dickinson

The moon was but a chin of gold

A night or two ago,

And now she turns her perfect face

Upon the world below.

✨Her forehead is of amplest blond;

Her cheek like beryl stone;

Her eye unto the summer dew

The likest I have known.

她的额头黄极了;

她的脸颊像绿宝石;

✨Her lips of amber never part;

But what must be the smile

Upon her friend she could bestow

Were such her silver will!

她的琥珀色的唇从不张开;

✨And what a privilege to be

But the remotest star!

For certainly her way might pass

Beside your twinkling door.

✨Her bonnet is the firmament,

The universe her shoe,

The stars the trinkets at her belt,

Her dimities of blue.
